SHILLONG:

At a time when the Meghalaya government has constituted a judicial inquiry to probe the encounter of ex-HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, Meghalaya‘s Director General of Police (DGP), R Chandranathan has reportedly applied for a leave.

Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday confirmed the news but said that his department is yet to receive the application and hence, he can’t divulge anything about the leave’s duration.

The news of DGP Chandranathan applying for leave, however, has raised some pertinent questions in various circles about the timing of the leave, and whether the government will approve the same, given that demands of suspension of police officials involved in the August 13 encounter growing louder.

In the absence of Chandranathan, the next senior-most police officer will take charge as acting DGP.
