SHILLONG:

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stood by his words even as a certain section of citizens criticised his “vegetables and rice” comment asserting that people should adjust during the time of the pandemic.

Tynsong had stated that people should be sure of survival during the pandemic and could manage with vegetables and rice instead of meat, given the current crisis.

“Yesterday, when I said that just for survival, at least we do not have the luxury of eating so many items of food be it vegetables or meat. But I said during the pandemic please let us adjust ourselves. Reacting to the comment, some people said – you talk so harshly that we felt so bad. Please don’t feel bad because I have to use that language as there is no way out. We are jointly responsible, unlike last year when the stock was not there,” he said.

He said that the government of India has repeated the system of food distribution like last year for May and June under NFSA.

The total number of 21,45,145  beneficiaries are covered under the NFSA in the state who will get their allocated quota in addition to the extra allocation of food grains, he said

“For the month of May and June, under NFSA, in addition to normal allotment of rice given to cardholders, they will be given an additional allotment of rice,” Tynsong said.

"The government understands the pain that the people go through. The stock of foodgrains is easily available," Tynsong concluded.
