SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday confirmed the decision to induct BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai into the state cabinet, replacing Health Minister AL Hek based on the recommendation made by the state party president Ernest Mawrie.

"That was the BJP's quota and the BJP had decided that Sanbor Shullai should be there, so Hek will be giving place to Sanbor," Sangma said.

He informed that during the formation of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, there was a meeting of top leaders of the BJP who included the then state president Shibun Lyngdoh, then Meghalaya in-charge Nalin Kohli and then union Tourism minister KJ Alphons.

During that meeting, there was a discussion amongst the MLAs and it was recommended that there should be some sharing in the ministership after two and a half years.

"BJP also had a meeting and a discussion but, no clear information came to me in this regard. But recently, I received a letter from the BJP state president, mentioning that meeting and said that the agreement should be honoured. Therefore, he had recommended that Sanbor Shullai should be taken in the cabinet and based on the letter of the BJP, this has been done," the CM said.

The development came just days after the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Shillong.

A BJP source confirmed that the arrangement came from the Delhi high command.

The BJP MLA from Shillong South Sanbor Shullai will be sworn in as minister in the Conrad Sangma-led cabinet at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday at 4 pm.
