SHILLONG:

Health Minister A.L. Hek, on Wednesday, while making an assessment of COVID related deaths in the state said that death rates have increased because people refrain from getting medical attention.

He said that people often seek medical help only after the disease has taken a toll on them.

“Deaths occur because of late treatment. Some suffer from co-morbidities which weakens the system and subsequently take their lives.” Hek said.

He said that those who are under home isolation would often experience a drop in their oxygen level and the disease would affect them psychologically.

“They suffer from depression and people develop fear. Hence, it is advised to take patients to a hospital where they can be treated better,” Hek added.

He suggested that people should go to hospitals for early and better treatment.

As for the Rs 50,000 ex-gratia payment to the next kin of the deceased COVID-19 patient, he said that the government will give the monetary assistance after following due procedures and verification.
