SHILLONG:

Congress MLA and leader of the opposition Mukul Sangma on Wednesday inspected the COVID Step Down Hospital located at Umsawli, Shillong.

The MLA while inspecting the preparedness of the hospital in dealing with COVID, informed that the younger group are more susceptible to COVID infection, and hence, they must take more precaution against the virus.

Turning to the current trend of infections in the state, he said that the second wave of the COVID curve will flatten steadily, maintaining that the rural areas are a cause of concern for now.

He stated that people in the villages are still reluctant to get themselves tested, and propagated that there should be auditing of every village, wherein disease surveillance system should be activated to know what is happening in every village.

Raising concerns about the death count being alarmingly high, Sangma said that fatalities are high because of the delay in the treatment process.

Patients are being brought to the hospital within a time frame of 24 hours to 4 days, which is a very short duration, and most of the damage has already been done.

"It means that the patients are being brought only after the progression of the diseases has taken a substantial toll on the patient. The team here has not been able to resuscitate and cure the patient resulting in loss of life," he said.

According to him, the deaths can also be due to the lack of institutionalised quarantine centres, corona care centres, home isolation strategy, where proper care is provided.

Sangma stressed the need for aggressive measures to improve upon things such as speeding up the vaccination process, ramping up health infrastructure, and increasing technical manpower in ICUs.
