SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said that though the recoveries have increased, and the number of positive cases has come down in the state, people should be vigilant in their fight against COVID.

“We will sit down and discuss after taking inputs from all the concerned officials because we are seeing the numbers coming down, but it does not mean that we can take it easy,” Sangma said while speaking to reporters on Thursday.

He has urged the people to not let their guards down and follow COVID appropriate behaviour at all times.

He said that the government will see the trend which includes the positivity rate, hospitalisation rate, specific growth in any areas, before taking any decision.

“Some sort of restrictions will still be there, and the question where we can allow more activities to take place,” Sangma said.

As for supporting the poor and the needy during the lockdown, Sangma informed that the MLAs are trying their best to support the people at the grassroots level.

"The government is managing the situation by enhancing the amount of support to MHIS, the ex-gratia payment to kith and kin of COVID deceased patients," he said, adding that unlike last time the government is following a selective process to minimise the economic impact on the people.

He further added that agricultural activities and MGNREGA activities are continuing with restrictions across the state.

Replying to queries on vaccination, Sangma said that there is a shortage of vaccine and the government is ramping up the procurement process.

Sangma maintained that the state government is hopeful of getting the required supply of vaccine doses in the coming days.
