SHILLONG:

Ahead of the bye-polls to the Rajabala seat, a complaint was lodged against Raksamgre legislator and Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) chief Benedict R Marak for alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

In the complaint filed before the Returning Officer on October 20, an election agent of the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate from Rajabala constituency Hashina Yasmin Mondal said that Marak had intimidated the electors of the constituency.

The complainant alleged that Marak, while interacting with the people of Tillapara near Bhaitbari on October 18, had threatened the electors, who didn’t turn up to attend the meeting organised by National People's Party (NPP), of dire consequences including eviction from the village.

“…it could be understood that he, being the MLA and CEM of the GHADC, is trying to influence and compel the people to vote in favour of his party (NPP) through intimidation by misusing his position and power, which is a complete violation of the Model Code of Conduct,” the complaint stated.
