SHILLONG:

The South West Khasi Hills (SWKH) unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has extended its support to the demand for the immediate upgradation of Mawsynram Community and Rural Development Block to a Civil Sub-Division.

President of the union SWKH unit, Forwardman Nongrem issued a statement informing that the MLA of Mawsynram Constituency HM Shangpliang and various NGOs have also raised the same demand for the past 20 years.

The upgradation will serve the interest of 164 villages of Mawsynram C&RD Block, Nongrem said.

Pointing that the distance of the border areas to the district headquarter in Shillong, and the poor connectivity in terms of road and communication act as hindrances to reach out development, the union stated that the administration has to be brought closer to the people for the development of the area.

“As civil sub-division is the only realistic way of bringing the administration closer to the people, and as the present Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has stated that it is a people’s government, hence, we strongly convey our message to the state government to listen to the demands made by the residents of Mawsynram," Nongrem said.
