Hate video circulator Vickey Dey is untraceable: CM Sangma informs House

SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday informed the House that the delay in the arrest of one Vickey Dey, who is wanted for making "hateful" and "inciting" comments against the citizens of Meghalaya, is because he is “untraceable”.

Replying to Congress legislator from Umroi, George B Lyngdoh’s query on the issue, the Chief Minister said the delay is also because state police have limitations in operating outside the jurisdiction of the state as the individual is “moving around in different locations, evading arrest”.

"During the investigation, a lookout notice was sent out to the Superintendent of Police (SP) of North and South Goa after information was received that the individuals was in hiding in that state," Sangma said, adding that reply from the SPs suggested that Dey could not be traced.

Similar notices were sent to Kolkata police but no response was received till date, Sangma said. "Even the CID Meghalaya sent lookout notice to all the states in the country but we have not received any reply till date. He is absconding and evading arrest. The cases are under investigation," added the chief minister.

Two cases were registered against Dey - the first being on September 2 2020 at Lumdiengjri police station (later transferred to Shella PS) and another at Sadar PS, Sangma said.

Earlier, Lyngdoh had questioned the government’s “inaction” in arresting Dey stating that it has been almost one year since a First Investigation Report (FIR) was lodged against him, but the police have not been able to nab him.

"His (Dey) comments were attempts to bring communal disharmony and spread false information about the character of the people of the state," said Lyngdoh. Dey had circulated hate videos during the Ichamati violence that had broken out in the border areas under Shella block in 2021.

The CM also appealed not to make statements doubting the capability of the state police, stating that "this would demoralise the morale of the police personnel who are working overtime to ensure the safety and protection of the citizens of the state."

"It is unfair to doubt the police. Yes, there are problems and challenges but it is not fair to make them look incompetent," Sangma said.
