SHILLONG:

A delegation of leaders from Patharkhmah led by the MLA of Jirang, Ri Bhoi, Sosthenes Sohtun, along with Jirang MDC of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Victor Ranee, met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday to discuss the up-gradation of the Patharkhmah administrative unit into a Civil Sub-Division.

“Western Ri-Bhoi is very far from the headquarters in Nongpoh. It is high time that the Patharkhmah administrative unit is upgraded to a Civil Sub-division so the people of the area can be benefitted,” the NPP MLA said, adding that the everyday residents face challenges of road connectivity and other developmental works. This is the second time the delegation has met the Chief Minister to discuss the issue.

Sohtun, however, thanked the state government for constructing a model college in the region which will become operational next year.

Speaking on the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border dispute on the sidelines of the meeting, considering his constituency shares 80 percent of its border with Assam, Sohtun said, “As of now, people are living peacefully. I would like the governments of Assam and Meghalaya to address the issue at the earliest so that people living at the border areas can live in peace.”

Meanwhile, Congress MDC from Mawhati, Ri Bhoi, Charles Marngar has sought CM Sangma’s intervention to expedite the process of removal of the temporary CRPF Camp set up by the Assam Government in Umlaper Village, Block-II from August 9. “It has not been removed yet. I was informed that it was set up to boost security arrangements ahead of the Independence Day celebrations," he said, adding that he has requested the CM to deploy CRPF and BSF personnel at Ummat village in Ri Bhoi to strengthen the state forces in the area.
