Covid-19 testing camps turned into ATMs by MDA to spend cash during bye-polls: MPCC chief Vincent Pala

Drawing comparisons between the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government and that of the Congress, Pala claimed that the state witnessed law and order during the latter’s reign, but today, the state is crippled with 'lawlessness".

SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Vincent H Pala has alleged that the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has turned Covid-19 testing camps, set up along the Shillong-Jowai route, into “ATMs” to spend during the bye-polls.

"If you go from Shillong to Jowai, you will see a lot of small gates, police check gates, forest check gates etc., all those are ATMs for the National People’s Party (NPP) and its main ally, United Democratic Party (UDP) to spend during the bye-elections," Pala told the press on October 20.

Drawing comparisons between the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government and that of the Congress, Pala claimed that the state witnessed law and order during the latter’s reign, but today, the state is crippled with 'lawlessness".

Despite people levelling Congress to be corrupt, “not a single scandal was reported when the party was in power. But today you see (corruption everywhere) be it on the roadside or offices," Pala claimed.

Maintaining that all these issues will be taken up during the campaigning for the bye-polls, Pala said that the plight of the farmers during Covid-19 pandemic will also be a major issue in this regard.

"We have divided our work among different leaders. And Mawsynram MLA, HM Shangpliang, is taking up the issue of farmers very strongly," he said.

The MPCC chief also added that more leaders will be joining the party after the bye-election. "…more people will be joining us again - not only leaders, but also people from the grassroots," Pala said, adding that people from Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi are keen on joining the Grand Old Party.

Reiterating that his priority is to bring back former leaders of the Congress, Pala said that he was supposed to induct quite a few, but that will require the high command’s approval and things are getting delayed due to the bye-polls.

"We are targeting the end of January or February. By then we will have a series of joining and launching (programmes)," he said, adding that post the bye-elections, he will take up the matter with the party high command.
