Congress will not protest against fuel price rise due to moral code of conduct in place ahead of by-polls: Vincent Pala

“The increase in fuel prices will have a negative impact on people living in tribal areas who have to regularly commute to cities for economic activities," Pala argued, adding that it will have a cascading effect on prices of essential goods and eventually lead to inflation.

SHILLONG:

The opposition Congress on October 20 said it cannot hold any protest against the fuel price hike due to the upcoming by-elections to the three Assembly seats slated for October 30.

“We were supposed to have a series of agitations over fuel price rise, but we could not because of the moral code of conduct in place ahead of the upcoming bye-elections,” said Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president, Vincent Pala.

Pala said that it is for the first time in history that the price of petrol has crossed Rs 100 mark in the country, and the machines at the fuel stations too have been replaced to display the correct prices after the unprecedented hike.

“The increase in fuel prices will have a negative impact on people living in tribal areas who have to regularly commute to cities for economic activities," Pala argued, adding that it will have a cascading effect on prices of essential goods and eventually lead to inflation.

Voicing similar concerns, Indian Youth Congress (IYC) national secretary in-charge of Meghalaya, Sarifa Rahman pointed that the outcome of all these things will reflect in people's verdict against the ruling government in the elections.

“I think the people of Meghalaya have understood how they are being governed, they will reply with their votes against the false promises made by the ruling government,” she said, holding the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responsible for the inflation.
