NONGPOH:

Leader of opposition Dr Mukul Sangma on Thursday paid a visit to the Maternity and Child Hospital at Umran Niangbyrnai and Civil Hospital, Nongpoh to find out facts on the preparation of the state government in fighting against COVID-19.

The inspection team comprising Congress legislators Himalaya Shangpliang, Zenith Sangma, George B. Lyngdoh, local MDC of Mawhati, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman Warr, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, R.M Kurbah among others.

Addressing media persons, Dr Mukul Sangma said as briefed by the government to have a collective endeavour to fight the spread of COVID-19, the preparation level was not up to the mark and there are many deficiencies.

“We can assume on the lack of preparation by the government to provide all the facilities and infrastructure to fight the spread of COVID-19 after it was revealed in the inspection that most of the district have been inspected,” said Sangma.

“Other than Civil Hospital, Shillong, none of the hospitals of the state can save lives of patients and requiring ICU intervention and ventilator are provided but there is no manpower to operate, also that he is unhappy with the Ri Bhoi District preparedness to curb COVID-19,” he added.

He also lamented that Doctors and Nurses including frontline workers, who are trying their best to save the people and if no facilities are being provided by the government this become obsolete.

Former Chief Minister also questioned the government that if they cannot prepare to contain the first and second wave of the pandemic, then it is doubtful that the government can fight the third wave of COVID-19.

Dr Sangma further said that whatever deficiency they found on the part of the preparedness by the state government, they will address the issue to the government and also to have a collective political will to solve the problems of people and the frontline workers.
