SHILLONG:

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Consumers & Farmers Protection Cell, on Friday, requested the Meghalaya government to conduct checks on rice mill factories, following allegations of distribution of sub-standard rice to beneficiaries under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme.

The student body also asked the government to sensitise the public from time to time about food fortification.

In a statement issued here on Friday, the KSU questioned the government on the delay in getting the report concerning allegations of sub-standard rice from the office of the Superintendent of Food & Civil Supply and Food Safety.

This report needs to be sent to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

"The state government has to speed up the report... as people are getting anxious," the release read.

Furthermore, the union has questioned the packaging of rice packets that arrive from outside the state.

The union argued that the rice packets do not mention whether the rice is fortified or not, raising doubts over the certification of the mills from where the rice packets are procured.
