SHILLONG:

With Meghalaya bye-election around the corner, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on October 19 said that the Home Department would do everything in its power to ensure a free and fair bye-election in the three constituencies - Mawphlang, Mawryngkneng and Rajabala - with all security arrangements in place.

The Home Minister was referring to the recent threat issued by Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), wherein the outfit had asked National People’s Party (NPP) to shut down all of its offices in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, and also appealed to the public to not vote for the party as a mark of protest against ex-militant Cherish S. Thangkhiew’s killing.

Brushing off the threats, Rymbui said that the police department is taking all necessary precautions to monitor the law and order situation in the state ahead of the polls.

"The department will not take any threat lightly. We will try to do whatever we can in order to ensure peace and tranquillity prevails in the state," said Rymbui, adding that election will be held in a peaceful environment.

Referring to the recent bomb blast in Laitumkhrah, and the recovery of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from NPP's office premise in Lower Lachumeire on October 4, Rymbui said that the investigation into the incident is in process and soon, the case will reach its logical conclusion.

Rymbui added that the government is taking all measures against the revival of militant activities in the state.
