Manipur: Ex Congress chief resigns from Assembly, party strength reduced to 16

Following his resignation from the post of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president, Congress MLA Govindas Konthoujam, on Wednesday resigned from the Manipur Legislative Assembly, officials said.

In a bulletin issued by the assembly secretariat M Ramani Devi, secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly said, "Shri Konthoujam Govindas, elected from 26-Bishnupur Assembly Constituency has resigned his membership from the Manipur Legislative Assembly".

"Consequent upon his resignation, 26-Bishnupur assembly constituency is now lying vacant with effect from Wednesday, the 28th July 2021," the bulletin read.

Konthoujam is a six-time elected Congress MLA from the Bishnupur Assembly Constituency, and also the Chief Whip of the Congress Legislature Party in the Assembly. He had resigned as MPCC president on July 20

With Kanthoujam's resignation, the party, which won 28 seats in the 2017 elections, now stands at 16.
