IMPHAL:

President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday appointed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, La Ganesan as the new Governor of Manipur.

Ganesan, a senior BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, replaced incumbent governor Najma Heptulla and became the 17th Governor of Manipur. He had earlier served the BJP in various capacities.

Press Secretary to the President of India, Ajay Kumar, through a release said, "The President is pleased to appoint Shri La Ganesan as the Governor of Manipur with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office."

The post of the governor had fallen vacant after the retirement of Najma Heptulla earlier this month, and thereby the charge was given to Sikkim governor Ganga Prasad for the interim period.

Speaking about the elevation, Ganesan said, "I feel very elated because my services have been recognised. I am prepared to work in any place in India. Previously, I had worked in Madhya Pradesh, and now in the Northeast."

Congratulations poured in from various political leaders after Genesan's appointment.
