IMPHAL:

The All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) has called for a 24-hour bandh in the hill districts of Manipur from Sunday midnight as a protest against the government's failure to table the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Councils Bill, 2021 in the ongoing monsoon session of the state assembly.

General Secretary of ATSUM, SR Andria, informed that the decision to impose the shutdown was taken by the union against the state’s “lackadaisical attitude” towards the Bill.

“We want to question why the state is hesitating to table and discuss the Bill on the floor of the House. The Bill is crucial for the welfare of the tribal people in the state,” said SR Andria.

The Hill Area Committee (HAC) had drafted the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Councils Bill, 2021, and submitted it to the Manipur Assembly for passing before the monsoon session of the house that began on August 20.

Speaking on the tenets of the Bill, Andria, stated that the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) had drafted the bill after taking into account the grievances of the tribal population residing in the hill areas of the state. He further added that it aims to bring “equal development” in the hill districts of the state.
