GUWAHATI:

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday, pledged that he would never allow Assam to be henceforth used as a transit route for psychotropic substances.

The chief minister also asserted that by acting tough against drug trafficking and destroying contraband drugs by way of burning, the state government was performing its duty to the nation.

Speaking at a programme organised at Barhampur in Nagaon district to dispose of the seized drugs amounting to Rs 36 crore, Sarma said that because of the state’s proximity to the Golden Triangle, Assam has long been used as a transit route for drug trafficking to other parts of the country.

“By acting against the drug traffickers, the government has not only put a spanner on the illegal drugs trade but also stopped the flow of drugs through the state to other parts of the country,” the chief minister said.

“The blazing flames of the seized drugs symbolises our government’s commitment to make Assam drug free and the operation against drugs will continue unabated. Our government will neither allow Assam to be used as a transit route for psychotropic substances nor let our youths fall prey to contraband drugs,” he said.

It may be noted that as a result of the state government’s uncompromising tirade against drugs over the last two months, a huge cache of contraband drugs, worth over Rs 163 crore was seized.

Therefore, the government decided to destroy the drugs by way of burning in accordance with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and with due clearance from the State Pollution Control Board.
