GUWAHATI:

Days after former All India Mahila Congress chief and ex-Silchar MP, Sushmita Dev tendered her resignation to join the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), atleast 34 Congress leaders and party workers have resigned from the party's primary membership.

The Congress members have pledged to support and build the Trinamool Congress (TMC) at the grassroots level in Barak Valley of Assam stating that the BJP and Congress have placed roadblocks in the development of Barak Valley.

Speaking about the sudden political development, general secretary of Silchar DCC, Papan Deb said, "We have experienced how the leadership under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have curtailed the development of the Barak Valley, and therefore a change is required for the growth of the region. The efforts of the TMC chairman and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee have encouraged us."

Deb was optimistic that individuals with strong ties with the former Silchar MP will cooperate with us and eventually join the AITC.

Members of the Congress who have quit the party include general secretary of Silchar DCC, Rahul Alam Laskar, general secretary (organisation) Silchar DCC, general secretary Silchar DCC, Pawan Deb, President INTUC Cachar, Anupam Paul and others.

Meanwhile, West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee is expected to visit Silchar in the next two months, said Deb adding that the members who have quit the congress have already started to work as a cohesive unit of the AITC.
