GUWAHATI:

In what is being seen as a major blow to the Congress party in Assam, the leader of the party’s women’s wing, Sushmita Dev has resigned from the party without citing any reason behind the decision.

On Monday, the daughter of former Congress leader, Late Santosh Mohan Dev, changed her Twitter profile to “former Congress leader”. In a letter tendered to the party president, Sonia Gandhi, Dev sought her blessings as she is “beginning a new chapter in public service” and thanked all her colleagues for their help and cooperation in her 30-year-old association with the party.

Considered as the face of the party in the Barak Valley, her resignation has fuelled speculation which party the former MP from Silchar, Assam, will join. Rumours are rife that Dev, who grabbed headlines for going against Congress’ stand on the Citizens Amendment Act (CAA) and openly backing the Act, might meet Trinamool Congress supremo, Mamata Banerjee on Monday.

Dev, was one of the Congress leaders whose Twitter account was recently blocked for posting pictures of parents of a minor, who was allegedly raped and murdered in Delhi. In March 2021, Congress had dismissed reports of Dev resigning from the party.
