GUWAHATI:

Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee arrived in Guwahati on December 21, and started her campaign by offering puja at Kamakhya Temple before starting her political sojourn to Shillong.

Accompanied by MP Sushmita Dev and other senior leaders of the party, Banerjee arrived at Gopi Nath Bordoloi International (GNBI) airport, Borjhar, at around 1 pm and proceeded directly to the temple.

She offered puja at Kamakhya and Bogola temple located at the Nilachar hills. However, she did not interact with media persons.

“It’s completely a private visit. She visited the temple to offer puja and will leave for Shillong,” a senior Trinamool leader from Assam said.

This is Mamata’s first visit to any state of Northeast after her party made inroads in Meghalaya and Assam poaching senior Congress leaders.

In November, the Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly, Mukul Sangma along with 11 Congress legislators joined TMC, giving a boost to the party in the Northeastern state.

The TMC chief will oversee the party work in Shillong during her visit and hold meetings with TMC leaders in Meghalaya.
