Assam CM visits grenade blast area of Tingrai Bazar, announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for victims' family

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Saturday, visited Tingrai Bazar in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam to take stock of the law and order situation. 

On Friday, two persons were killed and two others were injured in a grenade blast in the market area of Tingrai under Digboi police station in Tinsukia.

The deceased, identified as Sanjit  Singh(25)  and Surajit Talukdar (22), were residents of the Tingrai area. The injured Monjit Das and Ganasyam Agarwala are currently undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.

Talking to media persons in Tingrai on Saturday, Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the killing of the two youths. 

"We will take strong action against the persons who were behind the dastardly act. Peace should be maintained at any cost. We appealed to everybody to maintain peace in the area. We would not tolerate such activities any means," Sarma said.

On the other hand, Assam government has announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for the victims' family.

Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Digboi MLA Suren Phukan, Tinsukia MLA and cabinet minister Sanjay Kisan, Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma and Naharkatia MLA Taranga Gogoi accompanied the Chief Minister during his visit to Tingrai Bazar.

An investigating team had earlier suspected the Ulfa (I) for yesterday's grenade blast. But Ulfa (I), through a press statement, has denied their role in the grenade blast.

In another development on Saturday, Ulfa(I) has announced a unilateral ceasefire for three months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
