With an aim to hone budding talents and prepare them for future competitions, experienced climbers of the association, as well as veteran international players from Manipur, will train the participants in natural and artificial climbing.

Speaking to The Northeast Today (TNT), Debaprotim Lakhar, General Secretary, Assam Rock & Sport Climbing Association said that the objective is to make the participants aware of the different formats of climbing and provide them with hands-on knowledge about climbing as a competitive sport.

"They will be taught on the three formats of sport climbing - Lead, Speed and Bouldering, and will also be taught skills of a professional sports climber," Lakhar said.

Formed in 2005, the association also promotes other adventure sports like mountaineering, water sports, cycling, etc amongst others.

"The first two Assamese mountaineers, Tarun Saikia and Manish Deka, to conquer Mt. Everest were from our association only," added Lakhar.

Notably, this parallel form of competitive climbing was included in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and also Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

"Being an Olympic event, now the importance of promoting this sport amongst our youths of the region has become very essential," he said.
