GUWAHATI:

A 65-year-old man, the prime accused in the alleged rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl at Bhuragaon in central Assam’s Morigaon district, was arrested by Assam Police on Saturday night, official sources informed.

“The prime accused of this horrendous and inhuman crime, 65-year-old accused Sayad Ali, was arrested by Assam Police yesterday night. I have directed the inspecting officer to make a water-tight case,” Assam director general of police Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta tweeted on Sunday.

The minor girl was found dead in a jute field in Balidunga village, on June 20 and it was suspected upon preliminary investigation that she was raped and murdered.

The arrest took place less than two days after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took stock of the ongoing investigation and directed Morigaon superintendent of police, Aparna Natarajan to catch the culprits and hand them exemplary punishment in accordance with the law of the land.

The chief minister had met the minor girl’s family members on Friday and assured them of speedy justice.
