DIBRUGARH:

Margherita police intercepted a truck carrying illegal coal and arrested two persons at Borgolai in upper Assam Tinsukia district on April 16.

The police have identified them as Avinash Pradhan and Paban Sonar.

“We have intercepted a dumper (Truck) carrying illegal coal and arrested the driver and handy men. As per law, we will take action (against) them, and no illegal activities will be tolerated in the region,” said Tinsukia SP Vaibhav Nimbalkar.

Sources said illegal coal mining has been going on in the Margherita-Ledo area, and they transported trucks carrying illegal coal to other states.

“The illegal coal mining has again started at Ledo, Borgolai, Namdang, Jagun, Namphai, Tipong, Lalpahar areas. Every day, the coal smugglers are transporting the trucks to other states,” said a source.

“We have started our investigation and both of them were sent to judicial custody. If we find any illegal coal mining going on in the area, then as per law we will take action,” Tinsukia SP said.

It may be mentioned that the North Eastern Coalfield (NEC), which is a unit of Coal India Limited, has stopped coal mining in the area for the past several months, but illegal coal mining has been continuing in some parts of Ledo- Margherita region.

The incident has raised many questions about illegal coal mining after NEC has shut down mining in the region, said a source.
