GUWAHATI:

The Assam forest department has intensified its drive against illegal tree felling and timber trade across the state over the past one week.

A vehicle loaded with teak sawn timber was detected at Bangha in Karimganj on Thursday.

Range officer, Sadar and Assam Forest Protection Force personnel seized the vehicle, which was fully loaded with timber and brought it to the divisional forest office.

The market value of the teak sawn timber however has not been disclosed.

During interrogation of the driver, it came to light that the timber was loaded in bordering Mizoram and the vehicle entered the state through Hailakandi district.

In another search operation, a team of forest personnel under Barpeta Road Range detected an illegal band saw mill in the Karekun area under Sorbhog Beat Office in Barpeta district and brought the machinery and other equipment in its custody.
