DIBRUGARH:

The Dibrugarh district administration has imposed a complete ban on illegal coal mining at Tarajan Tea Estate in Naharkatia.

In an order issued by Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha, the ban was imposed under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

“The prohibitory order on illegal coal mining at Tarajan Tea Estate in Naharkatia will remain in force till further notice. Any person violating the order will be prosecuted under section 188 of the IPC,” read the order signed by the deputy commissioner.

Located at 5 km northeast of the Tipam-Deosali hill range under Digboi Forest Division, Tarajan Tea Estate is close to Tarajan hills and sources say that illegal rat-hole mining is rampant in the area.

“The pilferers dig out the coal through rat-hole mining and then it is sold to big parties. Everything happens under the nose of Joypur Police Station, but they do nothing,” said a source under the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, environmentalists have welcomed the government’s move stating that “it will help preserve the biodiversity of the area.” “It’s the rat-hole mining which was causing significant harm to the environment,” said Debojit Moran, an environmentalist.
