Curfew imposed in parts of Assam’s Hailakandi after communal clash injures two policemen

An indefinite curfew has been clamped in Hailakandi district’s Serispore Tea garden and nearby areas after two police personnel were injured in a violent clash between two communities following a road mishap on August 16.

Hailakandi district Magistrate, Rohan K Jha, imposed total curfew under Section 144, CrPc in the tea garden and three adjoining villages namely, Narainpur Pt-II, Itarkandi Pt-I, and Chandpur, from 10 pm on Monday.

"An incident of violence and vandalism has been reported by the Superintendent of Police, Hailakandi in Serispore market on August 16. Given the possibility of such incidents in the market and nearby areas, we have imposed a curfew", read the order by the Magistrate.

On Monday, a quarrel between an e-rickshaw driver and a passenger over a trivial issue took a communal turn when members belonging to two communities clashed with eachother. Accrding to the local sources, members of both the communities attacked each other with sharp weapons, and a place of worship was also vandalised in the violence. The police had to fire into the air to disperse the people and bring the situation under control. The second officer-in-charge (OC) of Hailakandi Police Station got injured and was rushed to the hospital.

 "Both the parties were pelting stones at each other. We got the information at 8.30 pm after which we rushed to the spot and were accompanied by Additional SP. Two of us got injured during the clash," said AH Laskar, second OC of Hailakandi Police Station.

Meanwhile, Algapur MLA Nizam Uddin Laskar has appealed to both the communities to maintain peace and keep faith in the judicial system.
