GUWAHATI:

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the Covid situation in the state is becoming "a little alarming" with about 5000 cases being reported every day.

The government is looking to scale up the ICU and hospital beds in the state. "With about 5000 Covid-19 cases being reported every day, (the) situation in Assam is becoming a little alarming. However, we’re prepared," Sarma tweeted.

Meanwhile, Assam is all set to launch its third phase of the COVID vaccination programme for 18-44 years in full swing from May 7, 2021.

Informing this, Assam Health Minister said that while the Covid Vaccination drive will symbolically start from May 5, it shall be rolled out in full swing from May 7.

The decision was taken after the state received the first batch of 1.5 lakh Covaxin doses from Bharat Biotech on Tuesday.

Considering the spike in Covid cases in the state, Sarma said there was an urgency to inoculate everyone at the earliest.

The Indian government had earlier announced that the third phase of vaccination for adults aged between 18-44 years would begin on May 1, 2021.

However, many states were not able to roll out the drive on the scheduled date due to the lack of vaccine.
