GUWAHATI:

Guwahati police on Saturday evening arrested Sherman Ali, Congress MLA of Baghbor constituency, from his residence in Dispur's MLA Hostel for making "communal and provocative" remarks. He has been arrested under non-bailable sections, the police said.

The arrest comes a day after Ali was served a showcause notice by his party for making derogatory comments against martyrs of the Assam agitation.

Recently, Ali in a statement had justified the killing of eight people in Darrang district in 1983 during the Assam agitation and had termed them as "killers". Many FIRs were registered in the state's police stations against Ali and various organisations were demanding the MLA’s arrest.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, Bhupen Bora termed the statement of Ali as 'irrelevant' saying that the Congress party “will not tolerate such statement”.
