DIBRUGARH:

The Darrang Police have identified six persons allegedly involved in the Siphajar eviction drive violence that left three persons dead and several others injured on September 23.

The persons are Ainuddin, Abdur Rahman Biswas, Nur Islam, Jiarul Haque, Shoriful Islam, and Najir Hussain Sarkar, the police said on Sunday.

"Our investigation is going on to ascertain more details. We have identified six persons, but have not arrested them yet," Darrang SP Sushanta Biswa Sarma said.

The police statement comes a day after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Assam government has clear evidence of the involvement of six persons, including a lecturer, in the case. He went on to say that these six people have collected Rs 28 lakh over four months from the poor families of Dholpur convincing them that they will stop the eviction drive. “When they couldn’t resist the drive, they mobilised the people and created havoc,” Sarma had said on September 25.

Meanwhile, the Hindu Yuba Chattra Parishad Association (HYCPA) said that government should not bow down against such forces and carry out the eviction drive to clear the encroachment.

"They are not landless people; they have plots in Dhubri, Salmara, and other areas of Assam. Their main motive is to grab government land and turn Assam into an Islamic state," HYCPA said in a press conference held on Sunday. The youth body also lashed out at Congrees and Raijor Dal for playing vote bank politics by supporting the “encroachers”.
