NEW DELHI:

Days after a land scam involving Chief Minister Sarma and his familiy came to the fore, the Congress, on Decemeber 19, demanded the central government to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the supervision of a sitting Supreme Court judge to investigate the matter.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has also demanded immediate removal of Sarma from his position besides filing a complaint by the enforcement directorate and other central agencies against him.

“Our demand is clear. We want immediate removal of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from his position besides initiating a SIT by a sitting SC judge,” said AICC-in-charge for Assam Jitendra Singh.

Singh said that on the one side when Sarma always shows high handedness in evicting poor and deprived families, on the other side, he hands over lands worth crores of rupees to his family members.

Singh was referring to reports where it was found that a real estate company, RBL realtors which was co-founded by Himanta’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma is allegedly occupying around 18 acres of government land intended for landless individuals and other institutions.

Earlier, Sarma had denied his involvement in any land scam.
