GUWAHATI:

Barak Democratic Front chief convenor Pradip Dutta Roy, who had issued an ultimatum to replace hoardings written in Assamese with Bengali, was arrested on November 27, after eight hours of interrogation.

Roy, on November 25, had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the district administration of Cachar for removing the hoardings, which drew massive criticism from various organisations, demanding his arrest for the same.

Cachar superintendent of police Ramandeep Kaur confirmed that a case was registered against him (Roy) at Silchar Sadar Police station by Hindu Yuva Parishad based on which the police started the probe against him.

“Police found enough evidence against him in the hoarding row. Charges under section 153, 295, 124, 505, 506 have been pressed against him,” Kaur said.

Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma had also announced that Roy will face stringent action for his activities.

Sarma said that “Pradip Dutta Roy is anti-Bengali,” and he is trying to destroy the image of Bengalis in the Barak Valley by bringing in the elements of communalism.
