“August 5 will be observed as 'Karmachari Divas’ in honour of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as he paid tribute to the state’s first Chief Minister, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on his 71st death anniversary at his samadhisthal near Navagraha Crematorium in Guwahati, on Thursday.

 "It is a humble effort by Assam government to honour the architect of modern Assam," he said at an all-faith prayer meeting organised by the Kamrup Metropolitan District administration in honour of the Bharat Ratna recipient.

The Chief Minister added that from next year 'Karmachari Divas'  would be observed in all the sub-divisions and districts of Assam to acknowledge those involved in public service. Sarma also announced a book on Bordoloi to be taught at Higher Secondary level in Assam.

Highlighting the Bharat Ratna recipient's life during his brief speech, Sarma said that Assam would be ever-grateful and indebted to Bordoloi for saving the state's identity. "It was Gopinath Borodoloi because of whom Assam remained an integral part of India," he said.

Principal Secretary to Home Neeraj Verma, Late Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi's family members, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) Biswajit Pegu, and a host of other dignitaries were also present to mark the occasion.
