DIBRUGARH:

A high-level review meeting was held at the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) Guest House, Lepetkata in Dibrugarh late on Wednesday evening to discuss security issues along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh borders ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.

The meeting was attended by Assam DGP, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, IGP (Law and Order) of Arunachal Pradesh Police, Chuku Apa, top officials of the army, Assam Rifles, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and Superintendent of Police of all upper Assam and eastern Arunachal districts along with representatives from various intelligence agencies.

Although the officials were tightlipped on the issues discussed during the meeting, highly-placed sources have informed TNT that militant activities and threats from the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA-I) and various factions of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) topped the list of discussions. The timing of the meeting is significant as the three-month unilateral suspension of operations by the ULFA-I, which the outfit announced three months ago due to the pandemic in Assam, ends on August 14.

The sources have also informed that the security forces have been put on high alert following input from an intelligence agency that “a militant group is once again trying hard to abduct oil or tea garden officials from the region”.

Apart from insurgency-related issues, matters concerning the illegal drugs trade too were discussed and police forces from both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have agreed to work in coordination to intensify the crackdown on the menace.

The SPs had also been advised to maintain strict vigil on the transportation of contraband substances in the areas near Myanmar.
