DIBRUGARH:

A 60-year-old woman was killed on suspicion of practising witchcraft at Kumguri village under Runikhata police station near the Assam-Bhutan border in Chirang district on August 6.

The deceased woman has been identified as Bale Mardi of Kumguri village.

Bajun Kisko, husband of the deceased, said, “I had gone to one of my relatives on Saturday and on returning I saw my wife’s body lying in a pool of blood. I immediately informed the villagers about the incident”.

However, the locals of Kumguri village alleged that the family members of Bale Mardi killed her in suspicion of practising witchcraft.

Circle inspector, Ratneswar Barman, said, “Right now we cannot say if it was a case of witch-hunting. We are investigating the case and cannot disclose anything because it is at a preliminary stage”.

Kumguri village is one of the remotest village in Chirang district, at the Assam-Bhutan border.
