DIBRUGARH:

People living in East Durgasarovar near Kamakhya Gate are spending sleepless nights as an adult leopard was spotted roaming around in the area.

About 250 families are in a state of panic and have requested the Forest Department to take urgent steps to tranquilize the animal at the earliest.

“We are in constant fear of being attacked. The animal has already killed scores of hens, ducks, goats, and other livestock. We are desperately seeking the help of the forest department,” said Abinash Rabha, a resident of the area.

Animal activist Julin Boruah visited the area recently and noticed pug marks of the leopard barely a hundred metres from the dwelling houses and asked the residents to petition the Environment and Forest Ministry for its intervention.

Environment and Forest Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya, on meeting with locals on Thursday, asked the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) to take steps in earnest, giving priority to the plea of the residents.
