DIBRUGARH:

A linkman of the ULFA-I involved in the Lakwa ONGC employee abduction case was shot in the leg while trying to escape from police custody, Sadiya Police officials informed.

The linkman has been identified as Tapan Buragohain.

It was informed that the incident took place on Friday night, when the linkman had accompanied a police team to show them the hideout of another ULFA-I insurgent.

Giving details of the insurgent, Sadiya SP Sumeet Sharma said, "The ULFA-I linkman was recently arrested in connection with the abduction of three ONGC employees from Lakwa on April 21. On July 9 between 11.30 pm to 12 midnight, he accompanied the police team to a remote area under the Sadiya police station to show the hideout of another ULFA-I associate. Subsequently, taking advantage of the darkness he tried to escape from the spot when police shot at his legs. He was later admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital."

Earlier, a constable of the 25th Assam Police (ONGC) Battalion, Basant Buragohain was arrested by the Sadiya police for his role in the abductions.

It may be mentioned that on April 21, three ONGC employees - Alakesh Saikia, Mohini Mohan Gogoi, and Retul Saikia - were abducted by armed ULFA-I militants from a work over rig site in Sivasagar district.

Two of them Alakesh Saikia and Mohini Mohan Gogoi were rescued within 72 hours by a joint team of the Army and Assam Police. However, the third employee Retul Saikia could only be rescued after Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had appealed to the ULFA-I to release Retul.
