DIBRUGARH:

Top ULFA-I leader Jibon Moran was taken into custody and brought to Dibrugarh police station for interrogation on Wednesday, following his capture by the Indian Army.

Dibrugarh SP Preetak Kumar Thube said, "We brought Punakanta alias Binod alias Jibon Moran to Dibrugarh police station on Thursday evening with the combined effort of Assam police and Indian Army. Right now we cannot say anything because interrogation is going on. What legal action we going to take against him will be briefed shortly>"

Moran was tested for COVID, and his health condition was examined before being brought to the police station, Thube informed.

It may be mentioned that on Wednesday, the Indian Army had taken Moran under their custody after he had entered the Indian border at Lazo village in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh.

After spending three decades with ULFA-I, Moran returned to the mainstream. He was one of the top functionaries of ULFA-I, who has worked in different organisational posts.

According to sources, he was interrogated by the central intelligence agencies at the army camp before being brought to the police station.

ULFA-I in a press statement recently had stated that Moran's health condition was not so good and as a result, he will be relieved from all his position and sent for treatment.

Moran was a part of many operations. He was also the outfit's finance secretary, according to sources.

His return will be a big boost for the security forces and for the Indian government to strengthen the peace process with the outfit, police informed.
