DIBRUGARH:

Two-time Congress legislature from Thowra constituency Sushanta Borgohain on Sunday formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a function held in Guwahati.

Borgohain resigned from the primary membership of the Congress party on July 30, blaming the “internal political atmosphere” in the party.

Sushanta Borgohain thanked the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal for welcoming him to the BJP.

Talking to media persons in Guwahati, Borgohain said, “I would like to thank you for welcoming me to the BJP fold. It was beyond my imagination when I had joined the Congress party that one day I will have to leave the party”.

He said the prevailing situation in the Assam Congress forced him to take the “painful” decision despite his efforts to help the party remain relevant in the state.

Recently, many Congress legislature have joined the saffron party after Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam.
