Assam: Two suspected dacoits killed in a police encounter in Goalpara

The Assam police shot down two suspected 'dacoits' in a gunfight in Goalpara district of Assam on Saturday night and search is on for two more persons who fled, officials said on Sunday.

Assam Director General of Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta informed that two of the dacoits, who have been identified as Rafajuddin & Basit Ali died in the shootout while one Rashidul Islam has been injured.

He said that the police are on the lookout for a fourth accomplice, adding that all of them have prior cases of dacoity against them.

"One gun and the car they were travelling in has been recovered," he said.

Taking to Twitter, the DGP wrote, "Sometimes criminals think they can outgun, outrun and outsmart Assam Police. That happened at Goalpara yesterday. Goalpara police had to chase criminals across the area of four police stations while being shot at. But finally, police got better of them".

This incident took the number of those killed in such encounters to 22. At least 34 others have been injured in such incidents across the state.
