The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), in a bulletin issued on Saturday, said that a population of 2.25 lakh in 15 districts, including over 39,000 children, has been affected by the recent floods across the state.

“The rivers in most of the affected districts are swelling and are flowing above the danger level in several places,” said an ASDMA official, adding that incidents of large-scale erosions are also reported from these districts that include Baksa, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Morigaon, Sonitpur and Tinsukia districts. About 16,338.46 hectares of farmland have been affected, the authority said.

The disaster management teams are on high alert in these areas, he added. The administration has set up 25 relief camps and 35 relief distribution centres for those affected by floods, in addition to rescue teams being deployed in flood-hit areas, the bulletin informed. According to sources, 512 villages are currently submerged in knee-deep water, and districts such as Dhemaji, Majuli, and Lakhimpur are the worst hit.

The ASDMA also informed that the state is experiencing floods due to a rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries following heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of Arunachal Pradesh.
