Assam: Three shops gutted in fire at new market area of Dibrugarh

A massive fire broke out at the new market area of Dibrugarh on Wednesday, which set ablaze three shops and damaged properties worth lakhs.

Sources said that the blaze originated from a shop selling cotton and later spread to nearby shops and residential buildings. 

"Today afternoon a fire broke out in a shop at new market area and then spread to other shops. Property worth lakhs were gutted in the inferno," an eyewitness said.

Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Preetak Kumar Thube said, "Right now we cannot ascertain where the fire originated from, but we have got the information that three shops were gutted in the fire and the second floor of a building was damaged. We cannot assess the damage right now because an investigation is going on. Firefighters brought the fire under control."

Altogether, 16 fire tenders from the State Fire and Emergency Services, BCPL, Oil India Limited and the Indian Air Force, were used to douse the fire.

Immediate after the fire, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ranjit Konwar, rushed to the place to take stock of the situation.

On April 26, six houses were gutted in a similar fire incident at the Prem Nagar area of Chandmari Ghat in Dibrugarh.
