DIBRUGARH:

The Sonowal Kachari community of Dibrugarh organised a prayer meeting here at Naharkatia on Saturday to remember those who succumbed to the COVID-19 virus, and pay tribute to their departed souls.

Speaking about the prayer meeting, the president of Sonowal Kachari Jatiya Parishad Gokul Bora said, "Many people have lost their near and dear ones during the COVID-19 pandemic. So, the idea came to my mind to organise a mass prayer and lit-up earthen lamps in memory of the departed persons."

Offering shradhanjali to the COVID victims, villagers from the two Sonowal Kachari villages - Na-Khotiya Sonowal gaon and Mathawoni gaon - lit up 4,444 earthen lamps (diyas) on both sides of the road passing through the two villages which have a combined population of 774 families.

The entire village population offered their prayers to Khring-Khring Baitho - the chief deity of the Sonowal Kachari community - and prayed for the eternal peace of the unfortunate people who died due to COVID-19.

Prayers were offered to the deity, representing the four elements - earth, water, air, and space - which safeguard humanity and are essential for human existence.

The special tribute programme was inaugurated by the chief executive member of Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council, Dipuranjan Makrari.

While paying tribute to the departed souls, Makrari said that the battle against COVID can only be won by following all the protocols and keeping discipline. People must not lower their guards against the deadly virus at such critical times.

The secretary of Sonowal Kachari Jatiya Parishad, Chandan Sonowal, president of All Assam Sonowal Kachari Students' Union, Devananda Cheleng, and secretary of All Assam Sonowal Kachari Nari Santha, Reshmi Rekha were also present at the prayer meeting.
