DIBRUGARH:

The prime accused in the Nandita Saikia murder case was shot at by police after he allegedly attempted to "escape" from police custody on Saturday evening.

Assam special director general of police (DGP), GP Singh, in a tweet, said, "One Rinku Sarma, accused of killing Nandita Saikia of Moridhal College, tried to snatch a police weapon and escape custody (sic)," adding that, police personnel subsequently fired in self-defence and thwarted the attempt.

Saikia, a college student from Naba Kathbari village in the Lakhimpur district, had recently succumbed to the grievous injuries she sustained in a machete attack by Rinku Sarma, an employee of the college where the victim studied, in Dhemaji district. He was arrested last month for murdering Saikia on August 21.

Given the seriousness of the case, the Assam government had earlier announced that Saikia's murder case will be judged in a fast-track court, and the case will be investigated by Special DGP, GP Singh.
