GUWAHATI:

Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has warned of zero tolerance against anyone flouting COVID norms, particularly in the containment zones, from Thursday.

The state government on Wednesday imposed stricter restrictions to break the virus transmission chain.

Accordingly, from Thursday onwards, curfew time has been preponed to 2pm (to be effective till 5am of next day) until further orders, while shops/commercial establishments have to down their shutters by 1pm.

Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Mahanta categorically warned people against organising functions, saying that anyone found doing the same will be charged with “attempt to murder”.

Urging citizens to strictly abide by the laid-down COVID protocols, the DGP said that the police would be compelled to resort to lathicharge if physical distancing norms in marketplaces are flouted.

He further warned strict action against shopkeepers and consumers against any “backdoor sale/purchase” after permitted time.

“Of late, we have received reports/complaints of several violations of COVID norms in the containment zones. Hence, from Thursday onwards, we shall keep a strict vigil on the containment zones and will not hesitate to book violators,” the DGP warned.
