GUWAHATI:

Assam Police have ascertained that the two minor sisters, who were found hanging from a tree in a village in Kokrajhar district in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), were allegedly raped and murdered.

However, the accused have been identified and arrested.

“The rape and murder of two minor tribal girls have been solved. IGP, BTR called to inform me about the outcome of the investigation. I had visited their residence on Sunday. Feeling a sense of satisfaction that the culprits have been identified,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted on Tuesday.

The case, apprehended to be “mysterious,” was cracked in less than 48 hours after chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had instructed the police to conduct an “expeditious investigation” to unearth the cause of the siblings’ death.

During his visit to the residence of the deceased siblings at Abhayakhuti village on Sunday, the chief minister had assured the family members of stringent action “if there is any foul play”.

Sarma henceforth directed the inspector-general of police, BTR, and the Kokrajhar superintendent of police to ascertain what had actually happened.

Subsequently, a special investigation team (SIT) was constituted by the IGP, BTR, to ensure proper and expeditious investigation.

Earlier on Friday, the two minor girls were found hanging from a tree after they had “gone missing” in the afternoon. Their family members were utterly surprised and had suspected foul play in the twin murders.

Meanwhile, residents of Abhayakhuti expressed their gratitude to the police administration for their prompt action and demanded capital punishment for the culprits who committed the ghastly crime.
