DIBRUGARH:

Sadiya police arrested another accused in connection with the abduction of three ONGC employees, who were abducted from the ONGC's Lakwa site under Sivasagar district on April 21.

The accused has been identified as Bhupen Barua, a resident of Sadiya.

According to police, Barua had provided logistical support to the militant outfit during the abduction of the ONGC staffers.

The arrest comes 48 hours after a member of ULFA-I (another accused in the abduction case) named Tapan Buragohain was shot in the leg when he tried to flee from police custody.

Buragohain was arrested from Teligorha village near the Assam-Arunachal inter-state border on July 8.

On April 21, three ONGC employees - Alakesh Saikia, Mohini Mohan Gogoi, and Retul Saikia - were abducted by armed ULFA-I militants from a workover rig site in Sivasagar district.

Two of them Alakesh Saikia and Mohini Mohan Gogoi were rescued within 72 hours by a joint team of the Army and Assam Police. However, the third employee Retul Saikia could only be rescued after Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had appealed to the ULFA-I to release Retul.
