DIBRUGARH:

Dibrugarh police busted a prostitution racket in three different locations of Dibrugarh town on Saturday. Four persons, accused of being pimps, were arrested for their involvement in the same.

According to the police, the raids were conducted after a tip-off received that a group of pimps had been running prostitution rackets in the area. The raids led to the arrest of Babu Ali, Hemanta Gogoi, Nazim Ahmed and Farida Begum.

Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Shwetank Mishra says the raids were conducted in Gandhi Nagar, Alokpath and Nalipool upon receiving information that girls were "being lured into such activity".

He added that a mother and son duo were also arrested for being part of the racket. Mishra added that the accused Farida Begum and Nazim Ahmed had been running the racket for many years from their flat, and they were part of a larger nexus of criminals involved in the flesh trade.

According to sources, "agents" jointly work with local gangs in order to lure young girls into the profession without coming under the radar of the law. However, police have intensified operations against such acts.
